What Happens at a Free In-Home Closet Design Consultation

At a free in-home closet design consultation, a designer comes to your home, sees how you use the space and measures it. Together you build a 3D design that shows component sizes, finish and hardware, and you can change anything. Once you're happy with it, you get a quote. There's no obligation to buy.
That visit is the first step of our design and installation process, and you can book it from our free design consultation page. It works the same way whether you're planning custom closets, a garage, a pantry or a home office. Below is what happens step by step, what to have ready, and the questions worth asking. To budget ahead, see our guide to custom closet costs.
Key takeaways
- The visit is a working session: a walk-through, measuring, samples, a 3D design and then a quote.
- You don't need to clean out the closet first. The designer wants to see how you use it today.
- Have a budget range, a rough count of what you store and photos of ideas you like.
- The consultation and the 3D design are free, and there's no obligation.
Step by step: what happens at the visit
- You book a time. Call (954) 900-9983 or use the online form, and mention every space you'd like looked at so the designer can plan for it.
- The walk-through. Your designer looks at how you use the space now and asks what isn't working: not enough hanging room, shoes on the floor, a shelf nobody can reach.
- Measuring. The designer measures the space itself, because even standard-size closets have quirks that store-bought organizers don't account for.
- Samples. You see finish, door and drawer style, and hardware samples in your own home, next to your own floors and walls.
- The 3D design. Using design software, the designer shows exactly what your system will look like, from the size of each component to the finish and hardware. You can add, remove or move pieces until it's right.
- The quote. Once you're satisfied with the design, you get a price. We carry economical as well as luxury products, so tell us your budget and we can usually work within it.
- Your decision. If you approve the design, you schedule installation, which usually follows a few weeks later. If you want time to think it over or compare companies, take it.
Owner Dave Kushner designs projects himself. As Cheryl K. put it in her review: "I really appreciate that Dave the owner comes out himself to measure, show samples, help with design and then does the quote."
What to prepare before your designer arrives
- A budget range. It's the quickest way to a design you'll approve, because it tells the designer which product lines and features to start from.
- A rough count of what you store. Long dresses and coats, shirts and pants, folded sweaters, shoes, handbags, jewelry, and anything you'd rather keep behind doors.
- Who uses the space. Heights matter for where rods and shelves go, especially in shared closets and kids' closets.
- Ideas you like. Photos from magazines or our project gallery help the designer understand the look you want.
- Your plans for the room. If you plan to paint, say so. Painting is best done before installation day.
- What to keep. Decide whether you want any of the old shelving. Installers can remove what you don't want.
What you don't need to do is tidy up. As our process page says, don't feel like you need to pack everything away before we visit. Seeing the space as it really is helps the designer solve the right problems.
Questions to ask at your consultation
- What is the system made of, and how does it hold up to humidity? (Our closet mold prevention guide explains why that matters here.)
- What exactly does the quote include: delivery, installation, removal of old shelving?
- What does the warranty cover? Ask about it at your consultation and get the terms in writing.
- How long until installation once I approve the design?
- Which parts can be adjusted later?
- What financing is available? We offer promotional financing through Synchrony, subject to credit approval.
- If I need to trim the budget, which changes save the most?

What the 3D design shows, and what it can't
The 3D design is a picture of the actual system you'd be buying, built from your measurements. It shows:
- The layout: where hanging space, shelves, drawers and doors go, and at what heights.
- The size of each component.
- The finish, the door and drawer style, and the hardware.
- Accessories such as valet rods, jewelry trays, a pull-out mirror, or an island where the space allows.
A screen can't show exactly how a finish looks under your closet's light, which is why the designer brings physical samples. Expect some back and forth, too. Joseph B. described it in his review: "We made a few changes to the design and Dave sent us a new model for our approval before proceeding."
Is it really free, with no obligation?
Yes. The in-home consultation and the 3D design cost nothing, and there's no obligation to buy. You can keep the conversation going, ask for changes, or decide it isn't the right time. There's no showroom trip to make, either: the designer brings the samples to you. We serve 17 cities across Broward and southern Palm Beach County; see our service areas.

Frequently asked questions
- How long does a closet design consultation take?
It depends on how many spaces you want designed and how many changes you make along the way. A single reach-in closet takes less time than a walk-in, a pantry and a garage together. When you book, list every space you'd like looked at so the designer can plan the visit, and ask how much time to set aside.
- Do I need to clean out my closet before the consultation?
No. Leave it as it is. The designer wants to see how you use the space today, including what ends up on the floor or piled on shelves, because that shows what the new design has to solve. You only need to empty the closet the day before installation.
- Will I get a price at the consultation?
You get a quote once you're satisfied with the 3D design. Because we offer economical and luxury product lines, sharing your budget early helps the designer build a design that lands where you want it. If the quote comes in higher than you hoped, ask which changes would bring it down.
- Can the designer plan more than one room in the same visit?
Yes. The consultation can cover your closets, garage, home office, laundry room, kitchen pantry or any other area, and the 3D design can include more than one space. Mention each space when you book so the designer can plan for it.
- Do you offer design consultations in my city?
We serve 17 cities in Broward and southern Palm Beach County, from Miramar and Hollywood north to Boynton Beach, including Coral Springs, Parkland, Weston, Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton. Our service areas page has the full list. If you're not sure your street is covered, call (954) 900-9983 and ask.
