Lauderhill, FL custom closets and home organization

Lauderhill was incorporated on June 20, 1959, and the city counts builder Herbert Sadkin as its founding father. He first planned to call the development Sunnydale. His friend William Safire thought that sounded like a Brooklyn neighborhood, and when Sadkin pointed out that there were no hills, Safire answered that there were probably no dales in Lauderdale either. The name Lauderhill came out of that exchange.

Inverrary Country Club opened in 1970, and two years later its East course became home to the Jackie Gleason Inverrary Classic on the PGA Tour, which it hosted through 1983. Into the late 1980s, Lauderhill, and Inverrary in particular, was largely a retirement community and a second home for snowbirds. By the 2020 census the city had 74,482 residents in about 8.5 square miles.

That history shows up in the housing. Lauderhill's median home went up in 1976, Census Bureau estimates show, and nearly half of Lauderhill's homes were built during the 1970s. More than half are in buildings with five or more units, and fewer than a third are detached houses.

Condos from that era often have reach-in closets with one shelf over one rod. A reach-in closet system can double the hanging space with two rods, add drawers inside the closet so a dresser can leave the bedroom, and put the space above the old shelf to use. Lazy Lee rotating shelving turns so that shoes, folded clothes or pantry items at the back come around to the front.

The second bedroom usually has the most jobs to do. A Murphy bed folds into a cabinet during the day, so the room can work as an office, then opens when family stays over. Add home office cabinetry around it for files, a printer and a work surface. In the kitchen, a pantry system with pull-outs and adjustable shelves makes better use of a narrow closet.

If you split the year between Lauderhill and somewhere up north, storage has to handle the gaps between visits as well as daily life. Upper cabinets and shelves above the hanging space keep suitcases, off-season clothes and spare linens out of the way, and closed doors keep dust off what stays behind while you're away.

Before installation day, check your association's rules on contractor hours, elevator use and parking for the installers' vehicle. If your building has a front desk or a gate, tell them when the designer is coming for the consultation and again when the crew is scheduled.
