West Palm Beach, FL custom closets and home organization

West Palm Beach began as Henry Flagler's town for the people who worked at his two grand hotels across the lagoon in Palm Beach. Flagler platted it in 1893, and it was incorporated on November 5, 1894, earlier than Miami. It became the seat of the new Palm Beach County in 1909, and by the 2020 census it was the county's largest city, with 117,415 residents.

Much of the early city is protected. West Palm Beach counts 17 historic districts, 9 of them on the National Register of Historic Places. El Cid is known for Mediterranean Revival and mission-style homes, Flamingo Park was developed mostly between 1921 and 1930, Old Northwood between 1920 and 1927, and Grandview Heights, one of the oldest intact neighborhoods, has craftsman bungalows built from about 1910 to 1925.

The rest of the city is much newer. Census Bureau estimates count about 5,400 homes built before 1940, but more than a third of all homes date from 2000 or later, for a median build year of 1988. About four in ten homes are detached houses, and about one in five is in a building of 50 or more units.

If you live in one of the older houses and the closets are small, a reach-in closet system gets more from them with double hanging, shelves and drawers sized to the space, and a walk-in closet can do the same for a larger room. Condo closets can take over a dresser's job with two rods of shirts and a built-in drawer tower, which leaves more of the bedroom floor open. Many condo buildings have contractor requirements, so check with your building manager about work hours, elevator reservations and any paperwork they need. Give the front desk the designer's name ahead of the consultation.

Houses with a garage can combine wall-mounted cabinets, slatwall, a workbench and overhead racks in one garage storage system, finished with Swisstrax tiles on the floor. Overhead racks are planned around the garage door: its tracks and opener claim part of the ceiling, and the racks use what's left. Hurricane season runs from June through November, so set aside a cabinet or shelf for water, batteries, flashlights and shutter hardware where you can reach them quickly.
