A Murphy bed, also called a wall bed, folds up into a wall cabinet so a home office, den or playroom can work as a guest room when you need one. Closet Décor & More designs and installs Murphy beds with matching shelves and cabinets in Broward and Palm Beach County homes, starting with a free in-home 3D design visit.
What a Murphy bed wall unit includes
Most of the time, a Murphy bed is a storage unit. When guests arrive, you pull the bed down, and they sleep on a real mattress instead of an air bed or a pull-out sofa. A typical wall unit includes:
- The bed cabinet, which hides the bed when it's folded up
- Side units with shelves and cabinets for books, extra linens and decor
- A counterbalance mechanism that makes the bed easy to raise and lower
- The finish, door style and hardware you choose with your designer, using samples at the visit. Preview our colors and door styles and handles and knobs, and ask which accessories suit the side units
If the room is also your office, the designer can plan the bed wall and your home office storage together. Other built-ins are on our unique spaces page.
Planning a Murphy bed
- Floor space when it's down. A standard queen mattress measures 60 by 80 inches, according to Amerisleep's mattress size chart, so a queen wall bed reaches more than 80 inches into the room once you count the cabinet. Plan a clear path around it and decide what furniture has to move.
- The wall. Murphy beds are installed onto the wall, so the designer checks it during the visit, along with outlets, switches, vents and windows the unit could cover.
- The mattress. Every wall bed has size and thickness limits, so ask which mattresses your design takes.
- Condo rules. If you live in a condo, check your association's rules on contractor access and work hours before installation day. Our post on Murphy beds for condos covers what to ask.

Frequently asked questions
- Is a Murphy bed the same as a wall bed?
Yes. Murphy bed and wall bed are two names for a bed that folds up into a cabinet against the wall. The name comes from William Murphy, who designed a fold-down bed in the early 20th century. Today's versions add shelving and cabinets, so the unit looks like built-in furniture when the bed is up.
- How much room do I need for a Murphy bed?
You need enough wall width for the unit plus clear floor in front of it for the bed. A standard queen mattress is 60 by 80 inches, so a queen wall bed reaches more than 80 inches into the room once you count the cabinet. The designer measures the room and plans the layout with you in 3D.
- Are Murphy beds comfortable for regular use?
They can be. Older wall beds had thin mattresses, but today's designs accept thicker, more comfortable ones, and a counterbalance mechanism makes the bed easy to raise and lower. If you plan to use the bed most nights, ask your designer which mattress sizes and thicknesses your bed takes.
- Can I put a Murphy bed in a condo?
Usually, yes, and a wall bed is a practical way to free up floor space in a condo's second bedroom or den. Before installation, check your association's rules for contractor access and work hours. The designer checks the wall at the free visit, and our condo Murphy bed post has more detail.
- Does a Murphy bed add storage?
Yes. Side units with shelves and cabinets hold books, extra linens and decor, and the bed folds away when it's not in use, so the room keeps its floor space for a desk, a play area or exercise. The designer sizes the side units to your wall.
- How much does a Murphy bed cost?
It depends on the bed size, the width of the wall unit, the shelves and cabinets you add, and your finish and hardware. You get an exact quote after the free in-home 3D design, with no obligation to buy. Promotional financing through Synchrony is available, subject to credit approval.
