Palm Beach, FL custom closets and home organization

Henry Flagler first visited in 1893 and opened the Royal Poinciana Hotel the following February. The Breakers followed in 1896, and Whitehall, his own house, was finished in 1902. The town was incorporated on April 17, 1911. Between 1919 and 1924, architect Addison Mizner designed 67 buildings here, including the Everglades Club, and Worth Avenue has been a shopping street since the 1920s. The town set up its Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1979, and its list now covers 328 properties, sites and vistas. Three bridges connect the island to West Palm Beach.

Palm Beach is a seasonal town. The 2020 census counted 9,245 year-round residents, and the population grows to around 25,000 during the winter season from November through April. On census day that April, 4,205 of the town's 9,256 homes were vacant. Census Bureau estimates put about four in ten homes in the seasonal or occasional-use category.

The housing splits two ways. About one home in four is a detached house, while nearly half are in buildings of 50 or more units. The median home was built in 1970, and more than one in ten dates from before 1940.

In a larger house, the primary closet can be a room of its own. A walk-in closet planned around your wardrobe can include long hanging for gowns and coats, double hanging for shirts, drawers in place of a dresser, shoe walls and an island if the room leaves space to walk around it. Condo closets are fixed in size, so the work is in the layout: double hanging, drawer stacks inside the closet and shelves sized to what you own. A reach-in closet system suits the guest rooms, and a Murphy bed lets a study double as a guest room.

Plan installation dates with the town's calendar in mind. The Town of Palm Beach sets construction hours by season, with its winter rules running from November 1 to April 30. It bars work on Sundays and observed Town holidays and prohibits construction work from December 24 through January 1. These rules have changed several times, so check the current version, and your condo building's own rules on work hours and elevators, before you choose a date.
