Plantation, FL custom closets and home organization

Plantation was built on drained Everglades land. Frederick C. Peters bought about 10,000 acres here, and the city takes its name from an earlier owner, the Everglades Plantation Company, which tried to grow rice and failed. The first homes went up in 1947, architect Russell Pancoast drew the master plan, and the city incorporated in 1953. Jacaranda was developed after a 1964 land purchase from the Peters family, and Plantation Acres and Melaleuca Isles were annexed in 1973. The 2020 census counted 91,750 residents.

Census Bureau estimates put the median home's construction year at 1984, and about half of all homes were built in the 1970s and 1980s. The mix is wide: roughly 45% are detached houses, about 10% are townhouses and other attached homes, and more than a third sit in buildings with five or more units.

Houses from those two decades usually have a primary walk-in and reach-ins in the other bedrooms, and many still have the builder's single shelf and rod. A custom walk-in closet replaces that with hanging space at two heights, drawer stacks and shoe shelves sized to what you own. Plantation Acres has a different feel from the rest of the city. The Plantation Acres Improvement District covers about 2,048 acres between Hiatus Road and Flamingo Road, mostly single-family estates of one acre or more, with horse farms, grazing pastures and a regional saddle club. On lots that size, the garage often holds mowers, tools and yard equipment along with the cars. Broward County is inside the Florida Building Code's High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, so garage doors here must carry a large-missile impact rating. When the door opens, it rolls up under the ceiling on its tracks, which is why overhead racks are placed around the door's path and the opener. Tall cabinets give hurricane-season supplies such as water, batteries and shutter hardware a dry place you can find quickly.

If you live in one of Plantation's condo buildings, ask your association about contractor hours, elevator reservations and installer parking before the crew arrives. A spare bedroom in a condo often has to be a guest room and an office at the same time, plus a place for off-season clothes.
