Custom Master Closet System

These are the questions South Florida homeowners ask us most about custom closets, garages and other storage projects. The short version: every project starts with a free in-home consultation where a designer measures, builds a 3D design with you and gives you a quote. If your question isn't here, call (954) 900-9983.

Free consultation and 3D design questions

Is the in-home design consultation really free?

Yes. The visit, the measurements, the 3D design and the quote cost nothing, and there's no obligation to buy. You decide afterward whether to go ahead. You can book a free design consultation online or call (954) 900-9983, Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm or Saturday 10am to 4pm.

What happens during the consultation?

Your designer looks at how you use the space now, measures it and talks through what you need to store, your style and your budget. Then they build a 3D design with you, showing component sizes, finish and hardware, and you can change anything. Once you're happy with the design, you get a price quote. Our process page walks through each step.

Who comes to my home for the consultation?

A Closet Décor & More designer. We're a locally owned and operated company, and owner Dave Kushner designs projects himself; many of our customer reviews mention him by name. The designer brings finish samples, so you can see colors and textures in your own room before you choose.

Do I need to measure or clear out my closet before the visit?

No to both. The designer takes precise measurements during the visit. Leave your things where they are, too: seeing what you hang, fold and stack helps the designer plan storage for what you actually own. You only need to empty the space before installation day, once the design is approved. What to expect at the visit has more.

Can I change the 3D design?

Yes. The 3D design is built with you, so you can adjust component sizes, the finish, the door style and the hardware until it looks right. Nothing is final until you approve the design and the quote. Several reviewers mention asking for revisions along the way; you can read their comments on our reviews page.

Process and timing questions

How long does it take from consultation to installation?

Installation usually happens a few weeks after you approve your design, depending on your schedule and ours. Your designer gives you the timeline for your project once the design is final. Our article on how long custom closet installation takes explains what affects the schedule.

How should I prepare for installation day?

Remove your clothes and personal items from the closet or space before the installers arrive. If you want to paint the walls, the time between design and installation is the easiest moment to do it. You don't need to take out the old shelving, because the installers can handle that. See how installation works.

Do your installers remove old shelving?

Yes. When your installer arrives, they remove any existing components you don't want to keep, such as wire shelving or an old rod and shelf, before the new system goes in. You don't need to hire anyone separately to tear out the old closet. Read the installation steps on our design and installation process page.

Will the installers clean up afterward?

Yes. When the installation is finished, the area is wiped down and dusted so you can put your things away right away. Because you approved the design in 3D, you'll already know where everything goes. Many of our clients mention how clean the crews leave the space in their Google reviews.

Can I start with one closet and add more later?

Yes. If you have several closets but a limited budget, starting with one small closet is a sensible approach, and you might be surprised how much space a single closet frees up. Our custom closet cost guide covers this and other ways to keep a project within budget.

Products and materials questions

What are your closet systems made of?

Our closets are made of wood with a melamine coating that resists moisture, stains and fading. Shelves and rods are adjustable, drawers are full-extension and cabinet doors use soft-close hinges. For a broader look at closet materials, including how melamine compares with solid wood and MDF, read what materials are used to build custom closets.

Do custom closets hold up in Florida humidity?

The melamine coating on our closet panels resists moisture, stains and fading, which matters in a humid climate. Good habits still help: keep air moving through the closet, don't leave dirty laundry inside, and deal with any leak or water damage quickly. Our guide to preventing mold in closets covers the warning signs and fixes.

What colors and finishes can I choose?

There are 13 standard finishes: White, Antique White, Arctic, Concrete, Cloud, Drift, Ash, Licorice, Tahoe, Dakota, Black, Vintage and Dune. Mixology accent colors are also available for door and drawer fronts, along with countertop options and cabinet door inserts. See the swatches on our colors and styles page; your designer also brings samples to the visit.

Which door and drawer styles do you offer?

Nine: Flat Panel, Modern, Raised Panel, Pillowtop, Shaker, Allegra, Slim Shaker, One-Piece Shaker and Milan. Your designer shows the door style you pick in your chosen finish in the 3D design, so you can see the combination before you approve it. Compare them side by side on our door and drawer styles page.

What accessories can you add?

Options include jewelry organizers, shoe fences, belt, tie, scarf and valet racks, sliding baskets, hooks, ironing boards, rotating mirrors, LED glass shelves and home safes with fingerprint, keypad or smartphone access. We also install Lazy Lee revolving shelving. Browse everything on our closet accessories page before your design visit.

What is Lazy Lee revolving shelving?

Lazy Lee is a revolving shelving system that uses 360 degrees of space instead of only the walls and floor. Units include a shoe spinner, a pantry unit, a valet unit with drawers, shelves and hanging space, a double-hang unit, and a freestanding state room unit. Learn more on our Lazy Lee page.

What handles and knobs are available?

Handles include the Bar, Bow, Mod, Staple, Swoop, Waterfall, Nordic and Luxe Leather styles, and knobs include the Button, Petite and Soft Square. Hardware comes in finishes such as matte aluminum, matte nickel, chrome, bronze, matte gold and graphite. See every option on our closet hardware page.

Garage storage questions

What garage storage systems do you install?

We design custom garage cabinets, slatwall wall racks, workbenches, shelving and overhead storage racks, plus accessories for tools, sports equipment, ladders, brooms and mops. The design keeps storage along the walls and overhead so the center of the garage stays clear for your car. See custom garage storage systems.

How much weight can your garage shelves hold?

Our garage cabinet shelving is rated for loads of up to 100 pounds. The cabinets are wood with a melamine coating, use stainless steel hardware and are mounted on the wall for stability, which also makes it easier to clean underneath. Details are on our garage storage page.

Will garage cabinets hold up to Florida humidity?

Our garage cabinets are wood with a melamine coating that resists stains, moisture and fading, and the hardware is stainless steel, which resists rust and corrosion. Closed cabinet doors also keep stored items dust-free. For storm-season planning, read our guide to hurricane-season garage storage.

Do you install garage floor tiles?

Yes. We install Swisstrax modular floor tiles, on their own or as part of a full garage project. The tiles are textured for slip resistance, let water drain underneath, resist fading in the sun and come in many colors and styles, including wood-look and diamond-plate tiles. See Swisstrax garage flooring.

What colors do garage cabinets come in?

Garage cabinets come in White, Silver, Coco, Lava, Bronze, Pewter, Slate and Basalt, and workbenches have their own countertop options. Swisstrax tiles add many more colors for the floor, so you can section off areas or match your favorite team. Compare them on our garage colors and styles page.

Questions about rooms beyond the closet

What other rooms do you organize?

Besides closets and garages, we design and install kitchen pantries, laundry rooms, home offices, mudrooms, entertainment units, craft rooms, linen and utility closets, and Murphy beds. Each project starts with the same free in-home visit and 3D design. Browse them on our spaces page or see unique storage spaces.

Do you install Murphy beds?

Yes. We design and install Murphy beds, also called wall beds, with matching shelves and cabinets on either side, so a home office, den or playroom can double as a guest room. A counterbalance mechanism makes the bed easy to raise and lower. Learn more on our Murphy bed page.

Can you build a pantry if my kitchen doesn't have one?

Yes. If you don't have a pantry, we can build a wall-mounted system that adds storage to the kitchen. In an existing pantry, pull-out shelves keep items visible, dividers stop cans and packets from tipping over, and wine racks protect bottles. See custom kitchen pantries.

What goes into a custom laundry room?

Usually a mix of deep shelves for sorted laundry, closed cabinets that keep detergent free of lint, a pull-down surface for folding or ironing, and a hanging rod or drying rack for items that air-dry. The design fits wherever your laundry lives, including a utility room or the garage. See custom laundry rooms.

Can you build a home office?

Yes. We build workspaces at the right height for you, wall-mounted cabinets, sturdy shelving and drawers sized for supplies or files, whether the office is a full room or part of a den or dining room. Your designer plans it in 3D at the free visit. See custom home offices.

Cost and financing questions

How much does a custom closet cost?

It depends on the size of the space, the finish and door style, the accessories you need and any extras like lighting or an island. Because every system is designed for its room, you get an exact quote after your free 3D design, with no obligation. Our guide to custom closet costs explains what makes a closet cost more or less.

Can you design to my budget?

Usually, yes. We carry economical as well as luxury products, so we can usually work within a budget as long as you tell us what it is. Share your number at the consultation and the designer will choose materials and accessories to fit. Our cost guide also has tips for saving on a custom closet.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. We offer promotional financing through Synchrony, often called "same as cash" financing, with a simple application and fast credit decisions. Financing is subject to credit approval, and minimum monthly payments are required. See current terms on our financing page, or ask your designer about it at the consultation.
