After Custom Closet System

A reach-in closet organizer replaces the single rod and shelf in a standard closet with a layout built to its exact width and depth: double-hang rods, adjustable shelves, drawers and shoe storage. Closet Décor & More designs and installs reach-in systems across Broward and southern Palm Beach County, starting with a free in-home 3D design.

What a reach-in closet organizer includes

Most reach-ins are narrow and shallow, so every component has to earn its place. A typical design combines:

  • Double-hang and long-hang rods, sized to what you actually hang
  • A center tower of shelves or drawers that splits the closet into zones
  • Adjustable shelves that run up toward the ceiling for folded clothes, bins and things you rarely need
  • Full-extension drawers, so nothing hides at the back
  • Shoe shelves or shoe fences, sliding baskets, hooks, and belt and tie racks from our closet accessories
  • The finish, door style and hardware you choose, from the same 13 finishes and nine door and drawer styles as our walk-ins, shown on our colors and styles page, with handles and knobs to match

The same approach works in hall, entry and coat closets, and in linen closets, where pull-out shelving and dividers keep towels, sheets and spare toiletries in order. If your pantry is a reach-in, see our kitchen pantry organizers.

Design considerations for a reach-in closet

  • Depth decides the layout. Hanging clothes take up about two feet of depth, according to Hunker's closet sizing guide, so depth sets how much of the closet can hang and how much should be shelves and drawers.
  • Use the hidden ends. Bifold and sliding doors often open narrower than the closet itself, leaving pockets at each end behind the wall. Those spots suit long hang or seasonal items.
  • Drawers need clearance. A drawer has to open past the door frame and any bifold panels, which the designer checks while measuring.
  • Keep everyday items in the middle. Daily clothes belong between waist and eye level; luggage and off-season pieces go up top.
  • Small closet, big wardrobe. A Lazy Lee valet unit combines drawers, shelves and hanging space on revolving shelving, so a small closet works more like a walk-in.

How the process works

  1. Book a free design visit. Call (954) 900-9983 or schedule your free in-home consultation.
  2. Design in 3D. The designer measures the closet and builds the design with you, including sizes, finish and hardware. Several closets can be planned at the same visit.
  3. Approve your quote. Tell us your budget. We offer economical and luxury lines, and Synchrony financing is available.
  4. Installation. Usually a few weeks later. Installers remove old wire shelving or rods you don't want and leave the closet wiped down and dusted.

Frequently asked questions

What is a reach-in closet?

A reach-in closet is one you stand outside of and reach into, usually behind bifold, sliding or hinged doors. Most bedrooms, hallways and entries have one. A custom reach-in organizer replaces the single rod and shelf many of these closets come with, adding rods, shelves, drawers and accessories sized to that closet.

Can a small reach-in closet hold more with an organizer?

Usually, yes. Double-hang rods add a second row of hanging space, shelves can run up toward the ceiling, and a drawer tower holds folded clothes that would otherwise need a dresser. The designer measures the closet and shows you the layout in 3D, so you can see what fits before you commit.

Should a reach-in closet have drawers or shelves?

Usually both. Drawers keep small items and folded clothes contained and tidy, while adjustable shelves hold bins, bags and stacks of sweaters and can move later. Your designer balances the two based on what you store, how deep the closet is and how much room the doors leave for drawers to open.

Can you organize linen, coat and hall closets too?

Yes. We design organizers for closets of every size, including linen closets, hall and entry closets, and coat closets. Pull-out shelves and dividers suit towels, sheets and toiletries, while hooks and shoe storage suit an entry. The designer can plan several closets at the same free visit.

How much does a reach-in closet organizer cost?

It depends on the closet's width, the finish and door style, and how many drawers and accessories you add. Reach-ins generally cost less than walk-ins because they use fewer materials. You get an exact quote after your free 3D design, with no obligation, and financing through Synchrony is available.
