Hallandale Beach, FL custom closets and home organization

Hallandale Beach began in the late 1890s as a farming settlement promoted by Luther Halland, the son of a Swedish worker on Henry Flagler's railroad, and by Swedish immigrant Olaf Zetterlund. It was incorporated as a town in 1927 and reincorporated as the City of Hallandale in 1947, which let it annex unincorporated land along the Atlantic shore. The name became Hallandale Beach in 1999. Today the city sits between Hollywood to the north, Aventura to the south, Pembroke Park to the west and the ocean to the east, and it's home to Gulfstream Park.

The housing is mostly vertical. Census Bureau estimates put about 58% of Hallandale Beach homes in buildings with 50 or more units, and fewer than one in ten are detached houses. The median home was built in 1975, and about six in ten went up in the 1960s and 1970s. Roughly one home in four is held for seasonal or occasional use.

A condo closet can't get bigger, so the layout has to work harder. In a primary closet, double hanging can nearly double the rod space for shirts and folded pants, and a drawer stack inside the closet can stand in for a dresser, freeing floor space in the bedroom. If the closet still has a single rod and shelf, a reach-in closet system adds a second rod, shelves and drawers sized to what you own, and a walk-in closet can trade unused floor for shoe shelves and drawers.

The second bedroom is where many condo owners need flexibility. A Murphy bed folds up into a cabinet, so the room can work as a den or home office most of the time and a guest room when family visits. Shelving or a desk can sit on either side of the bed cabinet.

Small kitchens benefit from a pantry system with adjustable shelves, and a laundry closet can take cabinets or shelves above the machines for detergent and linens. High-rise buildings often have their own rules for contractors. Before installation day, ask your building manager or association what they need: work hours, elevator or loading-dock reservations, and any paperwork they ask contractors to provide. For the consultation, leave the designer's name with the front desk or gatehouse and ask where a visitor should park.
