Having a home office is an integral part of telecommuting as it gives you much-needed separation between work and home.

Picking the perfect home office design idea is a combination of allotted space and personal style. You want to have plenty of room to work without the area feeling too cluttered. You need a work surface big enough to house your computer and enough cabinet and drawer space to hold all of your supplies.

In this article, you will learn about the different ways to design your ideal home office. Let’s get started!

Where to Set Up Your Home Office

Home Office Setup

Working from home comes with mixed results. You have the benefit of not having to dress up or struggle with a commute. However, there are a significant number of distractions that can keep you from doing your best work. That is why deciding where to set up your home office is the most critical step you’ll take.

Ideally, your home office is in a room with a door so that while working, distractions can be shut out. However, not all homes are equipped with enough space to dedicate a single place for an office. In this event, you need to find a spot where you can set up a permanent home for your work supplies and maybe a way to store them away at the end of the day, without relocating your items continually.

What you don’t want to do is share your workspace with the dining room table. There may be times where that is the only place available, but it is not a permanent solution. The constant distraction of everything going on around you, along with the need to continually gather and relocate your things, makes it a poor choice.

If you don’t have a room you can make into your office, choose a room section that can be allocated as your office space. Set up a permanent workspace that accommodates your computer and other office supplies. Once the workday is done, shut down your computer and leave it for the night.

While there are a few things that you must have in a home office, there are some things to consider. First, you need plenty of lighting in your office. Natural lighting is best, but if that is not possible, make sure that any lamps or overhead lights provide adequate illumination to reduce eye strain.

Another thing you need is access to high-speed internet. All home offices need to connect to the internet, and if your home’s wi-fi router doesn’t adequately reach your office, it may be time to invest in a more powerful router or rethink where your office is located.

You should have at least a surge protector that your device is plugged into for your computer system. A sudden power surge can destroy components within the computer tower, and if you use an all-in-one computer, the damage can be more substantial. A surge protector will keep your electrical equipment from being damaged during sudden surges.

A nice to have, but not necessary, component is an uninterruptible power supply or UPS. These devices give you time to save your work in the event of a power outage. The batteries don’t last more than an hour or two, but it is enough time to allow you to save files and properly shut down your system to avoid hardware damage. Most of these UPS devices have surge protectors built-in, so you don’t have additional surge protection.

Home Office Work Surfaces

Home Office Work Surface

An adequate work surface is necessary for all home office designs. Space is about making sure that you have what you need to work efficiently. It needs functionality first and foremost.

When choosing your work surface, you should start with the overall height. The body should be at a size that is ergonomic for you. An ergonomic height means that you should be able to for longer periods without developing a sore back, neck strain, or numb fingers. If you spend a lot of time on the computer, you should consider a workstation with a keyboard drawer to bring the keyboard down to a more comfortable level while keeping your monitors at an eye level.

The surface area is also essential. It should be big enough to accommodate all of your necessary work tools without crowding. For those who have a desktop computer with multiple monitors, the surface should accommodate those monitors. You should have enough space for your desktop or laptop and any notes you need to complete your job without worrying about accidentally knocking something off of the desk top. If you want to have your computer, calendar, and notepad within reach, you may consider using an L-shaped work surface.

Home Office Storage

All home office designs should include storage areas. Whether you choose to go with cabinets, drawers, or both, it depends on your needs and available space. If you have a dedicated room, you’ll have more storage options than someone using the corner of the living room as their office area.

The cabinets should be deep enough to hold items that you don’t necessarily need at your fingertips. They are  a great place to put binders and notebooks to be out of sight but easily accessible when you need them. A computer cabinet helps ensure that your desktop tower is out of sight, and cords are conveniently tucked away.

You can top lower cabinets with a work surface to create a place for a printer. It’s also ideal for adding a dedicated charging station for your mobile devices, which can be housed in this area and off of your main work area.

Drawers help you to keep smaller items organized, out of sight, but within reach when needed. The depth of drawers depends on what you need to store. Shallow drawers are ideal for pens, pencils, and small notepads. Deeper drawers are perfect for file folders. By having a custom made drawer system, your office becomes more functional.

Depending on your space, you may end up with storage that is more vertical than horizontal. Tall cabinets can make space feel taller and less crowded than shorter, horizontal cabinets. Choose your storage in a way that makes the most out of the space you have available.

Make Your Home Office Design Ideas Comfortable

Desk with Personal Items

Personal touches in your home office can make it more comfortable to work in. Selecting a paint color for the walls that is calming can help you feel relaxed while you work. Of course, some people prefer brighter, more energetic colors to help them feel ready to take on the world.

When designing your office space, don’t be afraid to include touches such as your favorite wood tones, like a mahogany desk, or a bold color choice such as pale blush pink. Splashes of color on your furniture can help pull together space while making it feel truly like your own.

You shouldn’t be afraid to add personal effects such as pictures and nick-nacks to your office. Be aware of your space, and don’t overdo it, or the area will feel crowded. You want to feel comfortable while not losing the functionality of the workspace.

Home office design ideas don’t have to take a lot of space. Not everyone has a full room to turn into their workspace. Take into consideration the square footage available and plan accordingly.
